Powerfilm: HP develops flexible OLED Displays

HP is developing this amazing technology with Phicot, a subsidiary of PowerFilm (PFLM.L), AIM London. At Phicot’s facility, layers of amorphous silicon and insulating materials are deposited onto plastic. These rolls of plastic are then sent to a facility at HP Labs, where engineers use a novel kind of lithography, called self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL), [...]

Powerfilm: Thin, but powerful

Powerfilm: Thin, but powerful

When U.S. troops in Afghanistan need to re-charge their laptops and mobile devices, they use a product manufactured by Ames-based PowerFilm, makers of “thin flexible solar panels and thin film electronics.”
With President Barack Obama’s visit to Iowa earlier this week to encourage the growth of advanced manufacturing in this state and the rest of the U.S., a June 27 open house at PowerFilm could not have come at a more opportune time.
The company is 23 years old, founded by former 3M research physicists Frank Jeffrey and Derrick Grimmer. It now employs 87 people in two buildings in an industrial area on the western outskirts of Ames.
Mike Coon, company vice president for business development and external relations, conducted tours for visitors including local business people and Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.
The first thing Coon showed visitors was a “flexible electronic display” developed for PowerFilm and delivered to the company in late June.
Coon said the product that could be “used to make unbreakable laptop computer screens. We are in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard and (getting assistance) from the U.S. Army” with the project.
